Aesthetic Security Tips: Making Your Home Look Safer

Posted on

Many home burglaries are crimes of convenience. Before deciding to break into a home, a burglar perceives that the home is easy to break into and/or they aren't likely to get caught in the act. Thus, making your home appear more secure can dissuade a potential crime from occurring.

Here are a few tips to improve your home's aesthetic security:

Vigilance

The evolution of wireless home security systems means that a homeowner can now access multiple cameras in and around the their home from the convenience of their smart phone. Although this technology can be expensive, making a criminal believe that they will be watched if they attempt to burglarize your home can be powerful deterrent.

  • Location: place security cameras where they are high off the ground (preventing them from being tampered with) but in visible locations. Making them visible at the most accessible perimeter location should be complemented with visible signs of security systems about every door of your home.

  • Advertise: simply placing a sign in your front yard can also be effective, however, it's important to make sure that our sign looks new and authentic.

Locked Down

Most burglars access homes through doors and windows. Thus, these entry points should always be fortified with locks.

  • Doors: adding an extra lock to each of your door makes it that much more difficult for a burglar to breach a door. When choosing a door lock, make sure that it is properly installed and comes with a bolt that slides into a metal jamb plate.

  • Windows: your windows, particularly those that are easily accessible from ground level, should be fortified with a lock and some sort of slide protector. For instance, you can use a length of wood dowel to wedge firmly secure the window in place.

  • Mesh: for particularly vulnerable windows, those not visible from the street, you may want to consider adding a security screen. A burglar who sees these extra lines of defense can quickly abort a planned break in.

Security Check

Most local police forces offer local residents a free security check. Not only is this inspection free, but you can also gain valuable information about the types of tactics used by local burglars.

  • Question: ask the law enforcement officer about local crimes committed in your neighborhood.

  • Consult: ask the law enforcement officer for improvements you can make to give your home an improved level of perceived security.
