Five Elements You Need To Secure Your Laundromat

Posted on

If you run a laundromat, you need a security system designed with your needs in mind. If you are wondering what you need, take a look at these ideas:

1. Remote Access Cameras

Cameras create a video record if anyone tries to break into your laundromat or steal items that are there. To track thieves trying to gain entry when you are not there, you may want a motion-activated camera near your front door.

If you don't want to physically be at your laundromat all the time, you may want cameras inside as well. Ideally, you should be able to monitor these cameras remotely. That allows you to see what's happening at the laundromat from your computer or through an app on your smartphone, regardless of where you are.

2. Security Guard or Attendant

If your laundromat is in an area with a lot of crime, you may also want to hire a security guard or an attendant. Their presence can be reassuring to both you and your clients. An attendant can work if you just want an employee on site. They can also deal with changing bills into quarters so you don't have to worry about the coin machine working.

If you want a bit more "muscle," you can hire security guards through multiple agencies. These professionals, however, will only watch your laundromat for crime. They aren't there to help clients with questions about how machines work, why the water isn't hot, or related issues.

3. Security Shuttering

To provide protection against vandals in particular, you may want to consider security shutters. These are metal roller doors that you can pull over your doors or windows. When locked securely in place, they are virtually impenetrable.

4. A Security System

You may also want a traditional security system. Monitored systems, in particular, are ideal. If someone trips the alarm, the monitoring company contacts emergency services in your area so they can send the police over. At a minimum, you want an alarm on every entryway. You should also consider putting in a glass-break detector in case someone tries to break in through the windows.

5. Outdoor Lighting

Simple things like lighting can also help to deter theft. You may want a motion-activated flood light that comes on when someone approaches the door. Additionally, you may want lights in the parking lot. That creates a safer situation for clients loading laundry in or out of their vehicles.
